Purchase: Buy PFIC shares; increases shareholding and sets/updates cost basis.
Distribution: Cash or in-kind distribution; taxable under §1291; no change in shareholding.
Reinvestment: Distribution reinvested into new shares; taxed as distribution first, then treated as a purchase; increases shareholding.
Sale: Disposition, redemption, or cancellation of shares; reduces shareholding; report gain/loss under §1291.
Return of Capital: Non-taxable return of investor’s capital; reduces PFIC cost basis; no change in shareholding.
Cost Base Adjustment: Non-share-reducing expenses/fees paid; lower PFIC cost basis; no immediate tax.
Ignore: Not relevant for PFIC reporting (e.g., internal transfers, FX only, metadata rows).
